Online Travel Industries:
Travel industries are fighting well to get the max user traffic on their sites. They want to attract more users those can book hotels and flights through them. Well know players are Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, Kayak, NexTag and now Google too. There are more good names; I will say big list, especially from US and India. Everybody is doing permutation and combination for their app and applying experiment, providing new deals, changing UI, promoting their business, blah blah… give me a break.
Not sure why industries want to follow a same base line, after a decade none of the industry came up with different idea. Expect change in existing feature, change in UI, layout etc. All sites have same base, same way of dealing with user, same way of dealing with merchants, same way of booking flights and booking hotels. Yes they are changing their architecture and applying More effective algorithms but as user do I really bother that which algo you have changed or which kind of DB you have replaced or updated. Things are like user just search for booking hotels and flights they never bother about your architecture they only look for your UI, Why we don't understand that user will learn what we want to, user will be habitual of what we serve. I am not saying user is not intelligent of course user will compare and follow the best and their is not limit of the best so come up with something the best , which simply awesome and certainly that's not on the base line as from a decade everybody is searching best around that only.
All industries does feature experimentation for their features, this term experimentation is very badly used. Not sure who actually invent this but surly Google follow this experimentation approach and so everybody does. Actually problem is that none of the person wants to take risk, so every want to follow one base line in this industry. Everybody wants to do experimentation on the base line only. While this is not actually experimentation, I will say this is user testing if user loves it you will move ahead else you will try something else.
Up to some extent this experimentation (so called) approach is good, even if I sit on top of some xyz company; I will follow same approach because why I will take risk. I will try to keep track of company on base line only, actual experiment may take company in down wards or may take upwards, and surly this will not keep company in middle position. That’s why everybody is not Sun Microsystems, Adobe, Linux, Apple. This fear stops most of the persons to do something out of the box and let fall in user testing (so called experiment for base line).
Here, I am not against the experimentation, but I suggest that these are not the actual experiment what online industries does, these are the user testing, Experimentation comes after lots of search/research and that makes a unique identity. So do the actual experimentation.
